International Voluntary Workcamp Tahla 2009

Tahla City

Tahla is a small city in Morocco. It is located in the region of Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate.  It is 70 km south east far from Fes. its weather is described as "Mediteranean". It is cold in Winter and hot in Summer.

The rapid population growth (25 000 habitants in 2004) was not accompanied by a similar development of infrastructure and facilities which caused the emergence of mixed urbanisation with anarchic suburbs, absence of green spaces, and lack of entertainment spots for young people.

The public facilities found in Tahla are: a hospital,  5 primary schools, 2 elementary schools, 1 High school, a municipality, a post office, a weekly souk, a youth center and a football stadium.

The main activities of the population of Tahla are agriculture and trade which generates only low incomes for the population that remains of a modest standard of living.

Tahla draws its potential and its strength from its environment and the natural landscapes surrounding it: the beautiful mountains of the Middle Atlas which contain several touristic sites (caves, lakes, springs, rivers ...), rich forests on an area of 67,000 ha with an important bio-diversity and a fertile agricultural land (1300 ha).

Due to its history as a pole of natural attraction, and to its geographical situation between the two neighboring cities Taza and Fez, Tahla is getting an important position as a gateway to the Middle East Atlas rich of tourism potential not yet exploited. the city of Tahla may in future play an important role as the center of tourism in the region.
